Sony Reportedly Stops Bringing PlayStation Single-Player Games to PC, Refocuses on Console ExclusivesSony is reportedly preparing to stop releasing its narrative-driven and single-player PlayStation exclusives on PC platforms such as Steam and Windows, marking a major shift in the company’s gaming strategy.
According to reports from several international media outlets including and Bloomberg, the decision was allegedly confirmed by PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst during an internal meeting with company staff.
The move is seen as part of Sony’s effort to strengthen the PlayStation console identity as the primary home for its premium exclusive titles, after several years of actively bringing major franchises to PC.Previously, Sony gained strong attention from PC gamers through releases such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part I and Ghost of Tsushima on Steam.
However, the strategy is now believed to have delivered lower returns than expected.Bloomberg also reported that several planned PC ports have allegedly been cancelled, including one for Ghost of Yōtei. Upcoming titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros are also expected to remain exclusive to the PlayStation 5.
However, the new policy reportedly does not affect multiplayer or live-service games. Sony is still expected to launch its online focused titles on PC, as those games require a large player base to remain active and profitable. Examples mentioned include Helldivers 2 and Marathon.Industry analysts believe the decision is also linked to growing competition with Microsoft and Xbox. Microsoft has become increasingly aggressive in bringing Xbox titles to multiple platforms, including PC and PlayStation, which some believe weakens the traditional concept of console exclusivity.
At the same time, Sony is reportedly aiming to ensure players continue buying PlayStation hardware in order to access exclusive gaming experiences unavailable elsewhere. Hardware sales and ecosystem profits are believed to be among the main reasons behind the strategic shift. If the reports prove accurate, the move could disappoint many PC gamers who have been hoping for more PlayStation exclusives to arrive on Steam. For Sony, however, the strategy may be viewed as necessary to preserve the long term strength of the PlayStation brand in the next era of console competition.
