Apple has officially introduced its latest budget-friendly laptop, the MacBook Neo, to the Malaysian market. After being unveiled earlier in March 2026, the device is now available nationwide with a starting price of RM2,499, making it the most affordable MacBook Apple has ever released in Malaysia.
The MacBook Neo is seen as Apple’s strategy to attract students, casual users, and first-time macOS buyers who want to enter the Apple ecosystem without paying premium prices for the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro lineup.Apple is offering the MacBook Neo in two main configurations:
- 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD storage – RM2,499
- 8GB RAM + 512GB SSD storage + Touch ID – RM2,899
For students and educational institutions, Apple also provides Education Savings pricing with the base model starting from RM2099.According to reports from SoyaCincau, several Appleauthorized sellers on Shopee and Lazada are also offering promotional prices as low as RM2248 for the entrylevel model.
Powered by the Apple A18 Pro Chip
Unlike the MacBook Air series that uses Apple M-series chips, the MacBook Neo is powered by the Apple A18 Pro chip the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Although it is primarily a mobile chipset, Apple claims it still delivers enough performance for everyday tasks such as studying, office work, video streaming and light editing. The laptop comes with:
- 6-core CPU
- 5-core GPU
- 8GB unified memory
- 256GB or 512GB SSD storage options
Premium Design With Simplified Features
Despite being positioned as a budget laptop, the MacBook Neo still retains Apple’s premium identity through its full aluminum body and lightweight design of approximately 1.23kg. It features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2408×1506 pixels and brightness of up to 500 nits.Apple also introduced four color options for the MacBook Neo Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo. However, to reduce costs Apple has removed several premium features, including:
- No backlit keyboard
- No True Tone display technology
- Trackpad without Force Touch
- Touch ID available only on the 512GB model
Battery Life Up to 16 Hours
One of the MacBook Neo’s biggest selling points is its battery life. Apple claims the device can last up to 16 hours for video streaming and around 11 hours of wireless web browsing. The laptop is equipped with a 36.5Wh battery and charges through a 20W USB-C charger, similar to modern iPhone chargers. In terms of connectivity, the MacBook Neo supports:
- WiFi 6E
- Bluetooth 6
- Two USB-C ports
- 3.5mm headphone jack
Targeted at Students and First-Time macOS Users
With a significantly lower price compared to the MacBook Air M5, which starts at around RM4,699, the MacBook Neo is clearly targeted at new users who want the macOS experience at a more affordable price.Industry analysts believe this move is part of Apple’s effort to compete with the growing number of budget Windows laptops that are popular among students and casual consumers.
Apple also highlighted sustainability, claiming the MacBook Neo is the company’s most environmentally friendly MacBook yet, using more than 60% recycled materials in its construction. With a starting price of RM2,499, premium design, long battery life and access to Apple’s ecosystem, the MacBook Neo is expected to become a popular choice among students and young users in Malaysia.
