Competition among global artificial intelligence companies has entered a new phase after OpenAI officially introduced “Daybreak,” an AI-powered cybersecurity platform widely seen as a direct rival to Anthropic’s well known Claude Mythos project.The announcement was made through OpenAI’s official blog on Tuesday, where the company described Daybreak as a system capable of identifying and patching software vulnerabilities before hackers can exploit them.
Daybreak is powered by the company’s “Codex Security AI Agent,” which OpenAI introduced earlier this year. The system is designed to analyze organizational source code, build threat models, identify potential attack paths and automatically detect high-risk security vulnerabilities.According to several international technology reports, OpenAI latest move is viewed as a direct response to Anthropic’s success with Claude Mythos under its cybersecurity initiative known as “Project Glasswing.
”Claude Mythos gained widespread attention after reports claimed the model could detect critical vulnerabilities in operating systems and web browsers at a level significantly more advanced than other AI systems. Due to security concerns, Anthropic reportedly restricted access to only a select number of organizations rather than releasing it publicly.S
ecurity evaluations from the UK AI Security Institute also suggested that Mythos successfully completed complex cyberattack simulations that other AI models failed to solve. Mozilla was reportedly able to uncover hundreds of vulnerabilities in Firefox with assistance from Mythos Preview.
OpenAI, however, appears to be taking a slightly different approach with Daybreak. While Anthropic has chosen a more cautious strategy with limited access due to safety concerns OpenAI is aiming for broader collaboration with cybersecurity firms and technology companies to strengthen digital defense efforts across the industry.Reports also indicate that Daybreak is not a single standalone model, but rather a combination of multiple GPT-5.5 Cyber models integrated with Codex Security to accelerate vulnerability discovery, automated patch generation, and verification of code fixes.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously stated that AI will play a major role in the future of cybersecurity, particularly in helping organizations respond more quickly to increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
