Sony and TSMC Plan New Japan Venture for Next-Generation Image Sensors

Tokyo — Japanese technology giant Sony Group is set to deepen its strategic partnership with TSMC through plans to establish a new joint venture in Japan focused on developing next-generation image sensors. In an announcement on Friday (May 8), both companies said the venture would combine Sony’s expertise in image sensor design with TSMC’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology. The move is seen as part of Japan’s broader effort to strengthen its semiconductor industry amid intensifying global competition.

The new company is expected to be majority-owned by Sony and will build a new production line at Sony’s fabrication facility in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The region has rapidly emerged as a key semiconductor hub following TSMC’s major investments in Japan over the past few years.

Sony and TSMC stated that the two parties have currently signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU). Final investment details are still under discussion and will depend on definitive agreements as well as regulatory approvals. The Japanese government is also expected to provide financial support to reinforce the country’s domestic semiconductor supply chain. The latest collaboration further expands the long-standing relationship between the two companies. In 2021, Sony and TSMC established Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) together with Denso and Toyota. JASM’s first factory in Kumamoto began mass production in late 2024 and has become a symbol of Japan’s semiconductor industry revival.

Image sensors are critical components used in smartphones, autonomous vehicles, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. In their statement, Sony and TSMC said the new venture would also explore opportunities in the “physical AI” sector, including next-generation automotive and robotics applications.Sony remains the world’s leading player in the global image sensor market, controlling more than half of the premium smartphone image sensor segment and other advanced electronics markets.

Meanwhile, TSMC continues expanding its manufacturing footprint beyond Taiwan amid growing geopolitical concerns and increasing demand from major economies seeking to secure strategic chip supplies. In addition to Japan, the company is also building major facilities in the United States and Germany.
