Rockstar Games is once again dominating headlines in the gaming world after confirming that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) will not launch on PC on day one. The decision sparked various speculations among gamers, including claims that Sony may have secured an exclusivity deal with Rockstar to give the PlayStation 5 an advantage. However, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick clarified that the decision has nothing to do with any agreement with Sony. Instead, Rockstar is said to be focusing first on its “core consumers,” namely console players.
According to Zelnick, this approach is not new, as Rockstar has a long history of releasing its games on consoles first before eventually bringing them to PC. The same strategy was used for major titles such as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, both of which only received PC versions months or even years after their console releases. In an interview with Bloomberg cited by several international gaming outlets, Zelnick explained that Rockstar wants to ensure its primary audience receives the best possible experience during the initial launch period. He believes the success of a blockbuster title depends heavily on how well the company serves its core community before expanding to other platforms.
Even so, the statement was not entirely well received by the PC gaming community. Many players argue that the PC market has become far too large to overlook, while others believe the strategy is ultimately aimed at increasing profits through double purchases. Across gaming discussions on Reddit, many users claimed that hardcore fans would likely end up buying the game twice first on console and later on PC when that version eventually launches.
Some players also suggested that Rockstar may be trying to avoid technical issues during the initial release, since developing a PC version requires optimization across a wide range of hardware configurations. By focusing first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar can concentrate on delivering a more stable and polished experience. At the same time, Zelnick acknowledged that the PC market is becoming increasingly important in the modern gaming industry. He noted that PC platforms can contribute nearly half of total sales for certain major titles. Nevertheless, Take-Two still sees consoles as the foundation of GTA 6’s early success.
As of now, Rockstar has yet to announce an official release date for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI. The game is currently scheduled to launch first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in November 2026, making it one of the most highly anticipated video game releases in modern gaming history.
